NADOLAN Workshop
In the northernmost part of Hualien, where the Taroko ethnic group resides, Hu Hsiu-lan inherited her mother’s weaving skills and began to learn traditional Taroko weaving at the age of 16. She applies a wide range of craftsmanship skills to the fabrics and weaves the traditional memories of the Taroko people and ancient legends into the fabrics to produce products of exquisite quality. In the year 2000, NADOLAN Workshop was established to develop more living fabrics that meet modern habits and visual aesthetics, so that the traditional culture can be woven to start a new life, showing the cultural charm of the Taroko ethnic group.
*Each thread represents insistence on weaving skill, the memory of the Taroko tribe from their childhood, and each piece of weaving is accompanied by a story of life given by the elders, waiting to be recorded at “NADOLAN.”
Tseung-Bo Leehan, a Taroko from Hualien, was influenced by his mother to be interested in weaving since he was a child and has been engaged in the field of Taroko craftsmanship for many years. He has accumulated a lot of teaching experience in governmental organizations and schools. In Taroko's tradition, males are not allowed to weave. However, he dares to challenge the tradition and insist on innovative ways to let more people know about the Taroko weaving culture.
