Sanyu (1895-1966), whose real name is Youshu, was born in Nanchong, Sichuan. Born in a wealthy family, he studied painting with his father Chang Shufang since he was a child, and learned calligraphy with the famous Zhao Xi. In 1919, he went to Japan for a study tour. With the assistance of (Chang Junmin), he went to Paris to study art and started his career in France. Sanyu is unrestrained and unrestrained in nature, pursuing freedom in life and art. Instead of continuing his studies in a formal art academy, he entered the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, which has a free atmosphere. He is different from his contemporaries Xu Beihong, Lin Fengmian and other students studying in France. After completing his studies, he did not return to China to run a school, but chose to stay in Paris for the rest of his life, becoming one of the very few Chinese representatives of the Paris School of Painting in the 1920s. In the 1920s and 1930s, Sanyu obtained works by the famous French writer, collector and dealer Henri-Pierre Roché, as well as the famous Dutch composer Johan Franco. The famous poets and writers of the Republic of China in the East, such as Xu Zhimo and Shao Xunmei, also highly respected him. Under the impact of Western modern thought, Sanyu experimentally reinterpreted Chinese art traditions and achieved an aesthetic mood that spanned cultures. Nudes, flowers and animals are the three major themes in Sanyu's creations. His early works are elegant in color and smooth in lines. The pink and white tones are full of pleasant romance; in the 1940s, Sanyu went to New York for a short period of time to develop and forged a deep friendship with the American photographer Robert Frank; after returning to Paris in the 1950s, he met again in France. Zhang Daqian, a fellow from Sichuan who held the exhibition, became close friends in their later years. With the ups and downs of life experience and the nostalgia for a long time away from the country, Sanyu's works in his later years were more oriental, and the animal works wandering in the desert were more like Projection of self-image. In 1964, Sanyu was invited to teach at National Taiwan Normal University and hold a solo exhibition. He was ready to return to the East, but he was unable to make the trip.
