Handmade Knitting Damascus Rose

Madiha, a mother of three kids, comes from Palmyra. Lying to the northeast of Damascus, Palmyra was very prosperous before the outbreak of the civil war. For Madiha, taking care of her kids is the most important thing in her life. She loves to do hand embroidery during her spare time, which she learned from her mother. She earned little money, 20-50 lira per month, from her embroidery works. To support her family, she worked day and night, and sometimes her eyes were just exhausted. However, still she can’t afford the tuition fee for her son. This year, Madiha is introduced by her friend to the Founding Director of the Taiwan Centre, Mr. Cho. She thought the Taiwan Centre would be the same as her previous experiences. To her surprise, when Mr. Cho saw her works, he said wholeheartedly, “Fantastic! Would you like to collaborate with our centre?” This time, Madiha gets what she deserves! The blossoming flower embroidered by Madiha is not only beautiful but also reflects the power of women. “Embroidery is art. After I was forced to fled, I sell my works to support my family. This Damask rose means a lot to me. It symbolizes Syria. When I embroider it, I think of my home and just forget about the pain and difficulties.
