Airplane - Lilienthal Glider
king of german glider
"Flying like a bird" has been a human dream since ancient times. From the cautionary tale of Icarus, whose wings were made of feathers and Wax, to da Vinci's ingenious flying machine, the reality of human flight remains an elusive dream.
Imagine that on a sunny, cloudless morning, I was part of a small group of people gathered at the foot of an artificial mountain in Prussia (Germany). On a 50-foot summit stands a man with an unusual winged contraption slung over his shoulders. Noticing the direction and speed of the wind, he ran forward a few feet, and—the man, unbelievably, flew!
While British scientist and inventor Sir George Cayley is credited with the first manned glider flight in 1853, Prussian Otto Lilienthal is credited with being the world's first successful aviator with his 1896 Completed more than 2,000 safe flights before dying in a crash. Prior to these remarkable flights, Lilienthal was the first to study the flight of birds and the structure of their wings, working on the problem of heavier-than-air flight and publishing his groundbreaking 1889 book Flight of Birds as the Basis of Aviation ".
Lilienthal's meticulous studies for future pilots became a huge inspiration to Wilbur and Orville Wright, and his tragic death spurred them into action.
