The scarlet color that is characteristic of Shigaraki ware is brought out in a gas kiln. The high temperature firing causes the coarse Stone in the clay to melt and come to the surface. After firing, the Stone on the surface are carefully polished by hand one by one to finish the piece. You can also enjoy watching the inside of the piece crack as you use it. About Crazing The fine glassy cracks on the surface take on color, changing and blending into the base color to a more tasteful shade.
