One of the founders of the movement was born in Jamestown, New York. In 1934, he published the seminal Handbook of Birds, the first modern field manual. This manual (The Guide to the Birds) has been released in 5 editions. He edited or wrote many special volumes in the Peterson Field Manual Series, covering everything from rocks and minerals to beetles and reptiles. His manuals are known for their clear illustrations. He also invented the "Peterson Identification System". Peterson has received nearly every major U.S. award in the natural sciences, ornithology, and conservation, as well as numerous honorary medals, diplomas, and citations, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
