Product Description

Tableau of four handpainted yellow tulip tiles in wooden frame. These tiles were manufactured by Tichelaar Makkum between 1880 and 1920 and are in fair condition as these tiles were removed from the wall of a Dutch house and therefore have apparent damage on the edges that occurred during removal. They also have craquelure on the surface due to their age as well as some production flaws. The photographs are a part of the description. The tableau measures 29.5x29.5cm “Delft” wall tiles have their origin in the second half of the sixteenth century, known as the early "Golden Age" of The Netherlands when Dutch science, trade, military and art became among the most acclaimed in the world. These popular tiles were often used to decorate fireplaces, kitchens or bathrooms since they could be easily cleaned. Hand-painted, they often depict everyday life of centuries ago, landscapes, animals, flowers, or have a biblical theme, and they are much sought after collector's items nowadays.
