Kikuchi's Gecko
The Kikuchi gecko, also known as the Orchid Island gecko, is only found on Orchid Island. It is a unique species in Taiwan and the largest native gecko species. It is rare in number and rarely seen. The Tawu people of Orchid Island believe that hearing the chirping of geckos in normal times means impending misfortune, but hearing it during the flying fish season will bring good harvest.
The body length of Kikuchi's gecko can reach up to 20 centimeters. It is characterized by a large number of warty scales on its back, paired black spots, and it lays two connected eggs each time.
In recent years, Taiwan has been invaded by an exotic species of ridged gecko that looks similar to Kikuchi's gecko, resulting in a decrease in the number of many native small geckos. If their distribution continues to spread, even the largest Kikuchi's gecko may be competed and squeezed out.
